WomanUp Foundation invites you to an online conversation with renowned theatre director, writer, and artist Lola Arias, focusing on the artistic research and creative process behind her internationally acclaimed performance Mother Tongue.

Created between 2021 and 2022 and developed across different cities, including Bologna, Madrid, and Berlin, Mother Tongue is a powerful documentary theatre project exploring motherhood and reproduction in the twenty-first century through the voices and experiences of diverse families and individuals.

The work brings together the stories of migrant mothers, trans parents, lesbian mothers, gay fathers, women who have had abortions, women who have adopted children, teenage mothers, and people who have chosen not to have children.

Through a hybrid space combining theatre, archive, and collective storytelling, the performers share personal stories and reflect on the political, social, and emotional dimensions of reproduction today.

In this special online conversation, Lola Arias will speak about the research process, artistic methodology, and collaborative work with communities that have shaped the different editions of Mother Tongue.

The conversation will also explore key themes emerging from the project, including:

reproductive rights and the politics of motherhood

queer and non-traditional families

assisted reproduction and surrogacy

migration and motherhood

the role of documentary theatre in addressing intimate and political experiences

The event is organized by WomanUp Foundation, a Bulgarian feminist organization working for maternal rights, reproductive justice, and respectful maternity care.

The discussion will connect the themes of Mother Tongue with WomanUp’s ongoing work to support mothers and families, advocate for reproductive rights, and amplify the voices of women and queer families in Bulgaria and beyond.
