Throughout July and August, Ivan Vazov – 2014 Community Centre continued its work on important issues affecting families – accessible summer childcare, parental participation, parents’ access to information, and the prevention of domestic violence.
Here is a brief overview of the main highlights from our colleagues’ work over the past two months.
On 9 July, the third family round table, “Accessible Summer Childcare”, was held at the community centre.
The meeting was preceded by a survey involving 60 parents. The results showed that arranging childcare during the summer holidays is a serious challenge for many families.
7 out of 10 parents said they face serious or rather serious difficulties.
98.3% said that Sofia Municipality should develop more accessible forms of summer childcare.
During the round table, participants discussed opportunities to improve and expand existing programmes – increasing the number of available places, introducing more flexible registration, providing better information about available places, and making use of a wider range of spaces such as schools, community centres, libraries, sports facilities and parks.
On 13 August, an online family round table was held on the topic “Who Can We Turn To? Rights and Reporting Options for Parents.”
The discussion focused on parents’ rights, institutional procedures, available reporting mechanisms, and ways of seeking support.
Before the meeting, a survey was conducted among parents, helping to identify the main information gaps and difficulties parents face when communicating with institutions.
The results will be used in the colleagues’ follow-up work on the topic, with the aim of making information about parents’ rights and available support more accessible, practical and useful for families.
Following the meeting of the National Council for Prevention and Protection against Domestic Violence on 13 August, Ivan Vazov – 2014 Community Centre submitted a position statement to the Chair and Secretariat of the Council.
On 26 August, our colleagues submitted to Sofia Municipality and the Sofia Municipal Council a set of consolidated proposals for changes and further development of the summer childcare programme. The documents were also sent to the Poduyane District Administration.
