On September 4, the Magna Silva Association brought together partners, experts, participants, institutions and civil society representatives at a final roundtable held at the Jägerhof Hotel as part of the “Life Without Fear” project.

As part of the project, an innovative “Violence-Free Zones” model was piloted in Plovdiv and the surrounding region. The model introduces a certification system designed to recognise companies and institutions committed to creating a workplace free from gender-based harassment, violence and discrimination.

The initiative was implemented by the Magna Silva Association within the “Silna” programme of the Bulgarian Fund for Women and formed part of the “Life Without Fear” project. At its core was an extensive study of workplace practices among companies in the region. A sociological team examined 200 of the largest companies in the Plovdiv region, using artificial intelligence tools as part of the analysis. In addition, a sample of 40 small and medium-sized enterprises was studied through interviews with management representatives and anonymous interviews with employees.

Key criteria included the presence of clear policies for preventing and responding to gender-based violence, including sexual harassment, as well as accessible and confidential reporting mechanisms such as hotlines, ombudspersons or independent ethics committees.

The results and significance of the initiative were presented during the final roundtable, dedicated to the issue of workplace harassment and violence. The discussion brought together psychologists, educators, representatives of the Municipality of Plovdiv and civil society organisations.

During the event, the annual “Equita” Awards were presented for the first time. The award consists of a plaque and certificate recognising commitment to gender equality. The awards honoured organisations demonstrating a commitment to equality and the creation of a safe working environment:

  • Industry: Liebherr-Hausgeräte Marica and Roza Impex Ltd.;
  • Culture and Media: POTV “Trakia”;
  • Small Businesses: Printing House “Zhanet 45”;
  • NGO: USRF Foundation (Ukraine Support & Renovation).

The “Equita” Award aims to become a recognised mark of excellence in corporate social responsibility, commitment to equality and zero tolerance for workplace harassment and violence.
