This year, women and girls from Karlovo marked International Women’s Day (March 8) with civic activism by joining the women’s rights protest march in Sofia.
The march was organized by the collective “Feminist Mobilizations” and the group “LevFem” under the slogan “Care and Resistance” — care and protection for women, and a struggle for recognition of their work, equal rights, and equal opportunities for participation.
A group of 15 women from the Women’s Club “Rose Valley” and girls from the Youth Information Centre – Karlovo stated their support for the #NotOneMore campaign by participating in the protest with the message: “Spread love, not violence!”
The messages of our group of women were for:
- equal rights and opportunities for women;
- respect for women’s rights;
- prevention of all forms of violence against women (both online and offline);
- combating gender stereotypes imposed by the media and the patriarchal model in our society;
- recognition of the enormous amount of additional labor that women perform at home and in caring for relatives and loved ones, which remains completely unrecognized by our social system;
- support for women in disadvantaged situations and women from vulnerable communities.
By participating in the protest, we also set an example of how important civic activism is in the fight for and defense of human rights. What we have today in Bulgaria and Europe in terms of women’s rights, freedom, peace, and democracy is the result of the long-standing struggle of millions of people around the world.
